Co-presented by the Center for Architecture + Design in collaboration with AIA San Francisco, the annual Architecture + the City Festival celebrates San Francisco's built environment through a variety of behind-the-scenes programs, walking tours, home tours, literature, exhibitions, and presentations.

INSPIRATIONS
The following are suggested topics to consider when submitting a program proposal. View the 2022 Architecture + the City Calendar of Events for inspirations.
 

  • What are the lasting impacts and/or lessons learned in a post-pandemic world as it relates to architecture and design in San Francisco?
  • How has architecture impacted you and the (re)use of space?
  • What types of architecture and design have you found inspiration?
  • What challenges continue to be part of housing, climate change, economic and health equity?
  • How do we design with connection in mind, that is human-centered and focuses on health, inclusivity and resilience?
  • How can we seamlessly connect the present urban community to empower a more deliberate, livable San Francisco?

Each year the festival explores and reveals the many layers of San Francisco and how ­architecture and design play a key role in the ever-changing urban landscape. We look forward to hearing your programming ideas that reflect the City's zeitgeist.


PROCEEDS
Proceeds from Architecture + the City Festival programs benefit the Center for Architecture + Design; proceeds from the Festival Home Tours benefit the American Institute of Architects, San Francisco (AIASF). Additional details to be provided to selected projects; all programming is subject to change.

About AIASF Home Tours
  Started in San Francisco in 2004, AIASF’s Home Tours program (formerly "San Francisco Living: Home Tours") is the first tour series of its kind in the Bay Area to promote a wide variety of architectural styles, neighborhoods, and residences. Projects are showcased via an open house format and tour participants have the opportunity to see some of the region's latest projects from the inside out, meet design teams, explore housing trends, and discover design solutions that inspire unique ways of living.
 

This is an excellent opportunity for architects and homeowners to showcase the positive impact of great residential design in San Francisco and demonstrate the ways design contributes to an improved quality of our daily lives.
 

Format: Self-guided one-day home tour showcasing multiple homes on Saturday, September 21 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM (Pacific Time). 

This year, AIASF encourages "all-electric project" submissions in an effort to show architects and the general public that design excellence and climate solutions go hand-in-hand. Features such as fully electric induction kitchens and electric heat pump mechanical systems are exciting technologies being adopted (and mandated) by local jurisdictions as the standard in low-carbon, high-efficiency homes. Additionally, electrification is supported and encouraged by AIA programs such as the Architecture 2030 Commitment, and the Framework for Design Excellence.

         The tour aims to:

  • Celebrate great design in the region, revealing ways it continues to contribute to our unique quality of life. 
  • Promote the awareness, understanding, appreciation, and experience of excellent design. 
  • Engage the community in conversation about residential design and connection with the surrounding environment.
  • Provide insights into the design process with pre-tour lectures and opportunities to interact with architects and designers on site during the tour.
  • Demonstrate the positive impact of great design as it contributes to our economy, environment and community identity.
  • Highlight the innovative talent of our local design community and inspire a new generation of architects to explore the field.

2024 AIASF Sustaining Sponsors and Center for A+D In-Kind Donors are eligible for the Member discount. Entry Fees are nonrefundable. Submissions must be fully completed and entered before the deadline.
 

Submission Eligibility: Open to small firms representing San Francisco Bay Area architecture, landscape architecture, interior architecture, and architectural lighting, Small Firms, Great Projects 19th edition provides a platform to feature their best work in print, online, and with AIASF programming. Featured work and profiles may include any client sector, or built project type completed within the past five years. Firms may submit work for a profile in a one-page layout or two-page spread. Firms may submit projects previously published in Small Firms, Great Projects, or other publications.  

This year's editorial articles will highlight the best of everything local in 2024, focusing on the processes and policies shaping our city, such as designing all-electric, office-to-housing, adaptive reuse, ADUs, building shared spaces, and so much more that make our region unique and innovative. Participants are invited to pitch editorial articles highlighting how small firms contribute to their local communities by advancing processes and policies that move the needle for positive change. This year SFGP is interested in showcasing the Process, from start to finish. We want to hear your architecture and design expertise on topics ranging from sustainable housing and neighborhood vitality to safe streets and downtown revitalization. Editorial submissions should focus on one or more of these topics, and highlight content different from firm profiles, this is your chance to showcase another project or promote your firm's area of expertise. Have an idea that relates to the theme? Propose a topic of your own!
